Dies in Winnipeg at 65

Heart Attack Claims Moderator of North America MB Conference

Winnipeg, Man. -- John A. Toews, moderator since 1975 of the General Conference of Mennonite Brethren in North America, died in a Winnipeg hospital Jan 13 of a heart attack. He was 65.

At the time of his death, Toews was an instructor at Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg. He had previously taught at Regent College in British Columbia and served in the pastoral ministry.

Toews was a Mennonite Brethren representative on the General Council of Mennonite World Conference, and had also served on the former Presidium. He was vice-chairman of the MB General Conference for six years prior to being elected moderator.

Toews was also the author of A History of the Mennonite Brethren Church.

Funeral services were held Jan. 16 at the Elmwood MB Church of Winnipeg and Jan. 18 at the Central Heights MB Church of Clearbrook, B. C. He was a member of the McIvor MB Church of Winnipeg.

Surviving are his widow, Nettie, and five children, John of New York City, David of Grand Prairie, Alta., Elfrieda of Manhattan, Kan., and Wilma and Irene of the Vancouver, B. C. area.
