Lifetime Newtonian 'Dutch' Toevs dies

Irvin E. "Dutch" Toevs, 74, 801 E. 4th, owner of Toevs Realty and a resident of Newton all of his life, died early this morning at his home after an extended illness.

Services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Monday at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, of which he was a charter member. The Rev. William Landis will officiate and entombment will be in Greenwood Abbey.

He was born June 2, 1906, in Newton, the son of Gustav R. and Marie Schroeder Toevs. On Sept. 19, 1935, he married Frankie L. Bogue in El Dorado. She survives of the home.

From the day of his graduation from Bethel College in 1928, "Dutch" had been in the realty business in Newton. Later he began selling insurance and was for a time a builder of homes in Newton.

In addition to being a charter member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, he also served as chairman of the Administrative Council and Council of Ministries of the church. He was a former member of the board of trustees for United Methodist Youthville and was a member of the Newton Chamber of Commerce, former member of the Newton Planning Commission, and a former member of the Newton Zoning Board of Appeals. He served as president and vice president of the Newton Real Estate Board 1939-1949 and president in 1969 and he was director of the Kansas Assn. of Real Estate Boards from 1946 to 1949 and a director again in 1969. He was a former member, past secretary and president of the Newton Insurance Board; he was a charter member and past president of the Newton Kiwanis Club.

He was a veteran of U. S. Navy Aerographers during World War II; a member and past commander of the Wayne G. Austin Post American Legion, and also served as a past Fifth District commander of the American Legion and was a member of the 40 & 8.

He was also a past member and president of the Newton Jr. Chamber of Commerce and was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award in 1938. He also had served as a state and national director of the Kansas and U. S. Jr. Chambers of Commerce, respectively.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Esther B. Bartsch of Topeka.

Friends may call at Draper-Cannon Funeral Home from noon Friday through Sunday. Memorials have been established for the church or Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Memorial gifts may be left at the funeral home.
