MARTIN THOMAS

Martin Thomas was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Dodge City, Kan., to Ben and Lovina (Mullet) Thomas. He died March 2, 1999, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Martin was raised in Dodge City and moved to the Custer County area in 1928 with his family where he farmed alongside his father. On Dec. 5, 1940, he married Barbara Ann Yoder, south of Thomas, Okla. They made their home south of Thomas and continued farming. He worked for Civilian Public Service from 1942 to1946 and then returned to the Thomas area.

In 1990, Martin retired. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and quilting. He was a member of the Pleasant View Mennonite Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann, of Hydro, Okla; three sons, Richard and his wife Fannie of Swink, Colo., Devert and his wife Kathy of Hydro and Dewayne and his wife Debra of Colony, Okla.; a daughter, Vesta Unruh and her husband Merlin of Harper, Kan.; two brothers, Ira of Goshen, Ind., and Ben of White Pigeon, Mich.; four sisters, Miriam Miller of Hydro, Katie Bontrager of Topeka, Ind., Amanda Stutzman of Weatherford, Okla., and Lovina Stutzman of Prague, Okla; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald and Galen; a brother, Pete; a sister; and twins in infancy.
