JOHN S. THIESSEN

John Thiessen was born on Nov. 4 1891 in Nikolaiwka, Ekaterinslav South Russia. With his parents, Johann Thiessens, he came to Gretna, Man. in 1903. Two years later they came to Herbert, Sask. settling on a farm east of the town. In March, 1916 he accepted the grace from God to become his child and later the same year he was baptized and accepted into the Mennonite Brethren church at Greenfarm.

He was married to Helen Thiessen, daughter of Jacob W. Thiessens, on Nov. 14, 1916 and moved onto his own farm south of Herbert where they lived until 1963 when illness forced them to retire to town. During his years of active life, John Thiessen was Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, church secretary and active in community affairs. He was a ready and willing worker.

He became ill in 1962 and required medical treatment periodically from that time until the time of his passing on Jan. 6, 1965. During his last evening he asked for some scriptures, prayed and asked the Lord to give him a restful night. Later that evening after a time of restlessness, he fell asleep and in his slumber went to his eternal rest.

He reached the age of 73 years. He leaves to mourn his wife Helen; a daughter, Adena; a son-in-law, Albert Voth; three grandchildren; four brothers and one sister. He was predeceased by his parents and one sister. His family mourns but not without hope.
