Martha Stucky

April 3, 1919 - August 14, 2010

Martha Stucky was born April 3, 1919, the fifth child in a family of nine, to Gideon and Emilie (Goering) Stucky. Martha attended Victory Elementary School and McPherson High School. She was baptized on June 23, 1935 at Eden Mennonite Church, Moundridge.

Martha graduated from Bethel College in 1943. She began her teaching career in Henderson, Nebraska as teacher-librarian and then in Lane County Community High School in Dighton, Kansas.

Summers were spent in Library Science School in Denver, Colorado. After graduating with high honors, her career path took her to Kansas State University in Manhattan which developed into a city wide library school system.

Martha's life was filled with Library Sciences and all things related. Her career dream came true when she was invited to come to Bethel College as head librarian. Her life revolved around Bethel College, Bethel College Mennonite Church which she joined in 1975, and the library where she served until her retirement.

The in-between spaces were filled with memberships in numerous business and professional organizations in the community, plus keeping up with all the nieces and nephews in the extended family, giving them books to instill in them the love of reading.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Linda Oberst, Paul Stucky, Bertha Reimer, and Mary Doerksen. She is survived by sisters Sara Daum, Elizabeth Belknap, Margaret Thiessen, and brother Willard Stucky.
