Early in his career, Stucky was a research chemist for four years with Miles Laboratories in Elkhart, Ind. In 1971-72, he performed tropical disease research for Mennonite Central committee in Con go. He taught at EMU from 1972 to 1993.
In addition to EMU and Bethel, Stucky taught at the University of Rochester, N.Y., and James Madison University in Harrisonburg.
Longtime friends and EMU colleague Jim Bishop of Harrisonburg remembered Stucky's enthusiasms for teaching and vintage 1950s music, as well as his care for other people.
"Gary was an encourager," Bishop said in a tribute prepared for Stucky's memorial service, "He often walked instead of drove, carrying a radio tuned to some news or talk show. He cared about pain and suffering so evident in the larger society and called us to pray, give and do whatever else we could to at least begin to respond as Christians to a hurting world."
Stucky served as a chaplain in Virginia. He also was commissioned as a chaplain by the Western District Conference of Mennonite Church USA in 2003.
He was born May 18, 1941, near Kingman, the son of Martin and Ruby Stucky. He married Janet C. Harder, a former dietetics professor at EMU, on June 22, 1996.
Stucky was educated at Kingman High School, Bethel College and Kansas State University. He later completed pastoral studies training at Eastern Mennonite Seminary.
Survivors include his wife, Janet, of North Newton; his mother, Ruby Stucky Schrag, of Pretty Prairie; three brothers, Steve, Dave and Gordon Stucky, all of Kingman; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Bethel College Mennonite Church.
