Well-Known Goshen Resident Dies While On Mission in Gulfport

Goshen, Ind. — Robert Stemen, 73, well-known resident here and a long-time member of the Eighth Street Mennonite Church, died Sept. 21 in Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, Miss. were [sic] he had gone in the interest of Mennonite Disaster Service work.

Mr. Stemen had provided transportation for a group of volunteers who went to aid victims of Hurricane Camille. He suffered a severe heart attack a short time after arriving in Gulfport.

A native of Elida, Ohio, he and his brother Gabe operated a restaurant here for a number of years. In recent years he was engaged in the lightning rod business and also raised turkeys at his home on Route 3.

Survivors include his second wife, the former Iva Kreider Moine; a son, James, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. James Ryman of Bristol; four grandchildren; three brothers and three sisters.
