Three Deaths Result When Aged Car Driver Suffers Fatal Attack

Lancaster, Pa. — Three Lancaster area men were dead following an unusual auto accident on Saturday, Dec.7.

A car driven by 80-year-old Levi Witmer stalled on a side road near the Columbia Pike. Jacob Mylin, an employee of the Kauffman Bros. Garage was called to service the car. Witmer was behind the steering wheel as Mr. Mylin opened the hood to make repairs. Suddenly the car shot forward and Mr. Mylin, trying to hang on, lost his balance and fell to the highway.

The car, with Mr. Witmer slumped over the steering wheel, continued down the side road onto the Columbia Pike where it hit a car driven by Joseph Staab, 40, of Lancaster. The Staab car was pushed into a garage and the Witmer auto proceeded across the highway and hit a truck.

Mr. Witmer was dead of a heart attack. Mr. Staab died at the scene, and Mr. Mylin died the following day. Two Staab children riding in the car were hospitalized.

Mr. Witmer and wife Mary had observed their 52nd wedding anniversary on Nov. 16. He was a member of the Mountville Mennonite Church, and funeral services were held at the Millersville Church.

Jacob Mylin, 60, is survived by his wife, the former Bertha Huber, a daughter and two grandchildren.
