Former Missionary To Africa Dies

REV. E. A. SOMMER ALSO SERVED CHURCHES IN SEVERAL STATES

Goshen, Ind. — Word was received here that Rev. E. A. Sommer, retired pastor and missionary to Africa under the Congo Inland Mission, died unexpectedly Jan. 20 while teaching a Sunday school class at Lakeland, Fla. He and his wife, the former Lydia Augsburger, had lived in Florida for some years.

Rev. and Mrs. Sommer served for several terms in Africa, where he was in charge of a Bible school for training native teachers. On one occasion the Sommers' were on a ship which struck amine in the English channel and were rescued from a lifeboat.

Rev. Sommer also served as pastor of Mennonite churches at Topeka and Middlebury, Ind., Washington, Ill. and Pulaski, Iowa.

Surviving in addition to Mrs. Sommer are two sons, Rev. Robert Sommer of Starke, Fla. and Gordon Sommer of Peoria, Ill.
