India MB leader dies in Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA — Sowlollu Solomon, a leader in the Mennonite Brethren Church in India, died March 1 in Pennsylvania. Solomon, 57, suffered a fatal heart attack followed by a stroke at Temple University Hospital.

Solomon was the Mennonite Brethren church in India's representative to the Mennonite World Conference General Council.

A pastor and church leader in India for 32 years, Solomon was secretary of the governing Council of the MB Church in India. He had served as pastor in several congregations and in various leadership roles in the conference and at MB Centenary Bible College. Since 2004, he served as vice principal and director of peace studies at the college.

Solomon went to Pennsylvania in March 2006 to earn a doctorate in theology at Calvary Baptist Theological Seminary in Lansdale. He had earned several bachelor's and master's degrees in India and had studied conflict transformation at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va. He had not seen his family in two years while studying in Pennsylvania.

Survivors include his wife, Vasanthamma; two sons; three daughters; two grandsons; and one granddaughter.
