Year-End Accident Results in death of Two Small Children

DAUGHTERS TO MR. AND MRS. WM. SNYDER VICTIMS OF FIRE THAT DESTROYS HOME

Wellman, Iowa. — On December 23 the most pitiful tragedy of the year occurred here when Marilyn, age 3, and Doris, only 10 months, little daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Snyder were burned to death. The distressing accident took place in a tenant house near Riverside while the mother was gone, only 500 feet away, to get some milk.

The oldest child, age 5, ran to call her mother and thus escaped injury. It is believed, but not known, that the stove might have exploded. Mrs. Snyder was forcibly held back from entering the flaming building.

The sympathy of the community was stirred far and wide. Services were held Sunday afternoon, Dec. 24, for the ashes at the Oathout funeral home in Iowa City.

Money in itself is but a cold offering but at a time like this the feeling back of it overshadows the gift. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder and little Charlotte, their remaining child, attended the East Union Mennonite church here Sunday, Dec. 31, to personally deliver their gratitude for aid given.
