JESSE E. SMUCKER

Jesse E. Smucker, the youngest of a family of 11 children of Jonathan and Saloma Smucker, was born on February 27, 1878, at Nappanee, Indiana, and died at his home at 1123 South Eighth Street, Goshen, Indiana, aged 68 years, 8 months.

On March 11, 1900, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Yoder and to them were born five children, Mrs. Edith Whipstock, Goshen, Paul of Philadelphia, Pa., Silas of Renssalaer, Ind., Mrs. Ruth Yoder, Shipshewana, Ind., and Mrs. Anna Ropp of Detroit, Mich.

In 1909 his wife Anna passed on to her reward. On February 20, 1910,he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Zook of the Clinton Frame congregation. To them was born one child, Hazel, who is now Mrs. Paton Yoder of Santa Barbara, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Emma, 16 grandchildren, one brother, Frank Smucker, and one sister, Mrs. Ida Eigsti, both living at Tiskilwa, Ill. He was a member of the Clinton Frame Mennonite church and was faithful in his religious duties and enjoyed a large circle of friends. All six children were present at their father's funeral, which occurred on November 16 from the Clinton Frame church. The services were in charge of the pastor, Rev. Ira Johns, assisted by Rev. Verle Hoffman.

The immediate cause of his sudden death was a cerebral hemorrhage. On the 12th he was about his duties as usual. After the evening meal he prepared to retire somewhat later than usual and after making a remark to his wife who was at the telephone, he went to the kitchen and a few minutes later his spirit was gone. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints."
