MRS. MAX SMITH

Effie Smith, daughter of Peter G. and Nettie Unruh, was born July 7, 1892, in Dundee, Kansas. She spent her early eyars [sic] on a farm near Pawnee Rock.

After attending elementary school, she spent two terms at a Bible school in Hillsboro, Kan., an experience to which reference was often made in later years.

She was baptized upon confession of faith in 1914 by Elder P. H. Dirks and became a member of the Bergthal Mennonite Church where she rendered a quiet service.

On May 24, 1916, she married max Smith. Elder P. H. Dirks performed the ceremony. they had celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary.

The birth of two daughters completed the family circle. They lived on a farm north of Pawnee Rock for 28 years and moved to town in 1944. Mother shared her interest in flowers with friends and passersby and preferred to spend much of her time in her garden.

She deeply appreciated the interest and concern shown her. She passed away Sunday evening Jan. 27, 1957, at the St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend. She reached the age of 64 years, six months and 20 days.

Her husband, Max, survives her, as do her daughters and their husbands, Maxlyn and Earl Schmidt and Ruth and Erwen Graber. Her grandchildren, whom she cherished, are Ann and Robert Schmidt and Pamela, Suzette and Max Graber.

Brothers who survive are Frank Unruh of Larned, Allen Unruh of Pawnee Rock and Roy Unruh of Kansas City, Mo. Her sisters include Nellie (Mrs. Clarence Smith) of Larned, Mrs. Lena Dirks of Great Bend and Anna Laura (Mrs. Frank Schultz) of Pawnee rock.
