DONNELLSON, IOWA

May 10, 1934

— One of the most heartbreaking tragedies that has even occurred in this vicinity took place on last Friday morning, when the barn on the H. O. Smith farm, south west of Donnellson, was dis covered on fire, and was destroyed with Donnie, the 9 year old son of the Smith family, trapped therein. his cries o fear were heard and his mother located him in the barn beyond the leaping flames in the driveway. The men folks being in the fields, and Mrs. Smith, frantic almost with the excitement of the impending tragedy, tried rom all angles to get to her son trapped in the burning structure, but the barn burst in flames before she could find a way to save him.
