• Clarence Smith, 75, realtor and insurance agent of Larned, Kan., died at his home there Sunday after an 18-month illness. He was a member of the Bergthal Mennonite Church, Pawnee Rock, where the funeral was to be conducted Wednesday afternoon. Survivors include his second wife, the former Ella Unruh; four sons and three daughters and their families; three brothers and three sisters. Sister Lena Mae Smith of Bethel Deaconess Hospital is one of the surviving sisters.

CLARENCE SMITH

Clarence Smith, eldest son of Samuel P. and Mary Boese Smith, was born May 10, 1889, near Pawnee Rock, Kan. He departed this life Feb. 28, 1965 at the age of 75 years, nine months and 18 days.

He was baptized upon his confession of faith by Peter H. Dirks and was a lifelong member of the Bergthal Mennonite Church. He served the church as a member of the church council, church treasurer, Sunday school teacher, member of the men's chorus and quartet, and in many other invaluable capacities.

On June 6, 1912, he was united in marriage with Nellie Mae Unruh. They were happily married for almost 48 years. To this union were born four sons and three daughters. The first seven years of marriage were spent near Pawnee rock and the next 26 years on a farm eight miles north of Larned. In 1946 they moved to the present home at 715 Carroll Street in Larned.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie, on Jan. 12, 1960.

On June 30, 1962, Clarence was united in marriage with Ella Unruh at Coldwater.

He was a devoted father and husband, working unselfishly to provide for the needs of his family. He especially enjoyed his real estate and insurance business, his association with people, and doing for others.

He had been in poor health for a year and six months, and passed away at the home Sunday evening, Feb. 25.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife Ella; four sons, Vernon and Homer of Toccoa, Ga.; Allen and Martin, of Larned; three daughters, Mrs. Ralph Buller (Cleo) of Larned, Mrs. Max Vogt (Velda) of Wichita, and Eloise of Denver; three brothers, Leo, Elrick, and Ben; three sisters, Bertha Dirks, Sister Lena Mae Smith, and Mrs. Hans Regier; four daughters-in-law; two sons-in-law; 22 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three step-daughters and two step-sons.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister and two grandchildren.
