JOSEPH G. SLAGELL

Joseph G. Slagell died Aug. 16, 1972 at the Thomas Memorial Hospital, Thomas, Okla., after an extended illness. He was born on Jan. 8, 1887 near Flanagan, Ill., the son of Preacher Joseph and Barbara (Gascho) Schlegel. He moved to the Thomas, Okla. community in 1906.

On March 9, 1913 he married Emma Schantz at the Pleasant View Mennonite Church, Hydro, Okla. In 1914 he was ordained a deacon of the church and served the congregation in this capacity until his resignation in 1962.

He was a man true to his convictions, committed to Christ and His church, concerned about the welfare and education of his family, and always ready to lend a helping hand to his neighbors.

Survivors include his wife Emma and six children: Elmer of Thomas; Mrs. Alva (Ellen) Yoder of Hydro; Mrs. Don (Lena) Cooprider of Hesston, Kan.; Miss Goldie Slagell of Connellsville, Pa.; Mrs. Allen (Lorene) Miller of Weatherford, Okla.; Mrs. Paul (Mary) Lederach of Scottdale, Pa.; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two infant sons preceded him in death. Also surviving are a brother, John Slagell of Hydro, and a sister, Mrs. Barbara Slagell Stutzman of Weatherford.

Funeral services were held Aug. 18 at the Pleasant View Mennonite Church with Alva Swartzendruber, Henry Yoder, Chester Slagell and Paul M. Lederach officiating.
