Retired Teacher Dies at Age 86

Goshen, Ind. — Funeral services for John F. Slabaugh, 86, retired school teacher, were held at the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home here April 4, with Rev. John Mosemann officiating.

Mr. Slabaugh, a member of the Goshen College Mennonite Church, died at the hospital here April 1. A native of the Kokomo community, he had taught in public schools and also at Goshen College. Mrs. Slabaugh, the former Ella A. Eash, died Jan. 12 of this year.

He is survived by a son, Paul, of Route 4, Goshen; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers, Dr. J. S. Slabaugh of Nappanee, Rev. Niles Slabaugh of Kokomo, and Albert Slabaugh of Alto, Mich.; and one sister, Mrs. Simon Berkey of Amboy, Ind.

JOHN F. SLABAUGH

John F. Slabaugh, son of Samuel and Lydia (Shrock) Slabaugh, a resident of Goshen, Ind. but formerly of Miami County, Ind., died at the Goshen General hospital of pneumonia and uremic poisoning after a 12-day illness. He was born near Plevna, Ind. on June 16, 1871, and died April 1, 1959.

He was married to Ella A. Eash, daughter of Christian and Barbara (Rich) Eash, who died Jan. 12, 1959.

He was a graduate of Goshen College and was a school teacher for 33 years. During most of his teaching career he served as principal of high schools in various parts of Indiana. He also taught art at Goshen College.

He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church from his youth and for a number of years he was Sunday school superintendent.

Surviving are one son, Paul T. Slabaugh of Goshen; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; three brothers and one sister, Dr. J. S. Slabaugh of Kokomo, Ind., Albert J. Slabaugh of Alto, Mich. and Mrs. Simon E.Birkey of Amboy, Ind.

Funeral services were conducted by John Mosemann and Sanford Yoder of the Goshen College congregation where he held membership at the time of his death.
