Parents of Four Die In Indiana Crash

Goshen, Ind. — A head-on collision on US-6 west of Wawaka, Ind. Sunday forenoon, Aug. 6, claimed the lives of a Middlebury couple and injured their four children and the driver of the other car.

Double funeral services for Owen R. Slabach, 32, and his wife, Evelyn (Yoder) Slabach, 27, were conducted the afternoon of Aug. 9 at the Clinton Frame Mennonite Church near Middlebury. Rev. Vernon Bonteger officiated.

The Slabach family had attended Sunday school and were on the way to visit Mrs. Slabach's brother, Marvin Yoder and family, at Kendallville when their car was hit by one driven by Levi M. Lehman, 28, of rural Kimmell. Officers reported that the Lehman auto veered across the center line.

Hospitalized at Kendallville were the Slabach children: Douglas, 7, severe concussion; Scotland, 4, body abrasions; Bonita Sue, 3, fractured leg; and Jeremy, 10 months, abrasions of the face. Lehman was in critical condition in a Fort Wayne Hospital.

Mr. Slabach was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roman Slabach, rural Middlebury. His wife was the daughter of Oscar Yoder, also of Middlebury, and the late Kathryn (Bontrager) Yoder.
