• Funeral services for Emil Seiler, 89, retired farmer of the Halstead community, were held Sunday afternoon at the Grace Mennonite church west of Halstead, with Rev. Carl Dirks and Rev. Arnold Wiggers officiating. Mr. Seiler died March 14 at Mercy Hospital in Moundridge. A native of Switzerland, he came to the Halstead area from France in 1893. He leaves his widow, the former Lena Dirks, two sons, one daughter, 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

EMIL SEILER

Emil Seiler was born Dec. 13, 1873, at Vandlincour, Switzerland to Andrew and Elizabeth (Bieri) Seiler. At the age of three years he with his parents moved to France. In 1893 he and one of his brothers came to America to enjoy the privileges and blessings of this land with his sister, brother and grandparents who already lived here. Later the rest of his family — father, mother, younger brothers and sister — came to this country.

On Jan. 29, 1907, he was joined in marriage to Lena Dirks, with whom he shared the joys and sorrows of life for a little over 56 years. To this union three children were born.

In his early youth he had an experience with the Lord, and again about five years ago the Lord drew very close. He often expressed his desire to leave this earth and go home to a better land.

Several times he was hospitalized but always recovered and was able to come home. On March 3, 1963, he suddenly became sick and was taken to Mercy Hospital, there to be tenderly cared for until the night of March 14, 1963, when he peacefully fell asleep to be at rest forevermore. He reached the age of 89 years, three months, and one day.

He often expressed a deep concern for all his loved ones, that they would someday meet him.

He leaves to mourn his departure his sorrowing companion; one daughter and two sons, Caroline and husband Jake, Walter and wife Priscilla, Robert and wife Evelyn; 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Katie Seiler of Halstead and Mrs. Emma Seiler of Marshalltown, Iowa; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. His father, mother, four brothers, two sisters, and two brothers-in-law preceded him in death. — The Family.
