Amish Bishop Taken in Death In Indiana

MANY ATTEND FINAL SERVICES FOR BISH. JOSEPH A. SCHWARTZ

Berne, Ind. — Several hundred relatives and friends, including a number from other states, attended funeral services here on Jan. 11 for Joseph A. Schwartz, 81, bishop of the Amish church who passed away at his home north of Berne on Sunday, Jan. 9.

Many friends of the community also called at the Schwartz home before the funeral to pay final respects to the aged bishop, who was a life-long resident of the community and one of its respected leaders. He had been in ill health for several months.

Bishop Schwartz was formerly one of the leading farmers of Monroe township, and also gained considerable recognition as a bee keeper. He had served as a bishop and minister of the church for over 45 years.

He leaves an unusually large family of descendants, including two daughters, eight sons, 101 grandchildren, and 89 great grandchildren. Three brothers, David of Ft. Wayne and Peter A. and Dan A. of this community, also survive.

Several outside bishops assisted the church leaders here at the final services, which were held at the Schwartz home and also at the Peter Hilty home nearby. Burial was made in the Schwartz cemetery.
