NEWTON & VICINITY

Ed J. Schroeder of Hillsboro, a retired Goessel area farmer, died Nov. 18 at the age of 71. Services took place Nov. 21 at the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church with Orlando Waltner in charge. He was married in 1936 to Frieda Schmidt, who died in 1978. He moved to Salem Home at Hillsboro in 1984. Surviving are three sons, Dennis of Goessel, Jerry of rural Newton and Clyde of Hillsboro; two daughters, Analene Klassen of rural Newton and Vera Flaming of The Dalles, Ore.; five sisters, Alice Pankratz and Edna Nickel, both of Newton, Margaret Riesen of Wichita, Esther Ratzlaff of rural Hesston and Evelyn Banman of rural Hillsboro; a half-brother, Alden Schroeder of rural Canton; a half-sister, Marlene Schroeder of rural Newton; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
