— Funeral services were held at the Eden Mennonite Church on Jan. 28 for Henry J. Schrag, 56, of Moundridge, who died at Mercy Hospital Jan. 25 after a long illness. Rev. Peter Dyck officiated. Mr. Schrag farmed in Harvey County until about two years ago. He leaves his wife, Elsie; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Schrag, of Moundridge; a daughter, Mrs. Earl Bartel of Moundridge; two sisters and six brothers.

HENRY J. SCHRAG

Henry J. Schrag was born September 14, 1899, near Moundridge, Kansas, and quietly passed away January 25, 1956, at 4:55 p. m. in the Mercy Hospital at Moundridge, reaching the age of 56 years, 4 months and 11 days

He was baptized upon his confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his Saviour, November 25, 1917, by Rev. N. R. Kaufman at which time he joined the Hopefield Mennonite church. In 1934, he transferred his membership to the Eden Mennonite church where he remained a faithful member until the time of his departure from this life.

He was united in marriage with Elsie M. Kaufman on October 24, 1920. They were privileged to share joys and sorrows for 35 years, 3 months, and one day. To this union two children were born, Marlo Kenneth and Darleen Jane.

Brother Schrag became afflicted with cancer years ago. Since then, he was under constant treatment which periodically kept the affliction inactive. Finally the time came when treatment was of no avail. Through out all this intense suffering he sang praises unto his Lord and Saviour and was thankful that there was a light guiding him as he "cradled in the Father-Heart of God."

At the age of 18 he began to serve as Sunday School teacher and continued in this capacity except when he served as deacon or some other position of responsibility in church work until his health failed. These obligations were always joyfully performed as long as he was physically able, and thereafter he continued in prayerful intercession for his church community and the Lord's work in general.

He received his elementary education in District 78 of Harvey County. He also attended the Preparatory School at Hoffnugsau [sic Hoffnungsau]. Feeling that his own educational opportunities were too limited he zealously supported educational and civic advancement in his community and often assumed leadership responsibilities in these areas. He was endowed with extra ordinary mental capacity along with unusual ability of public address, and therefore was able to make his influence felt in many areas.

In 1945, he welcomed Earl Bartel into his family circle as husband of his daughter, Darleen. His two grandchildren, Mark and Marsha brought him unceasing joy and comfort. His family will always gratefully remember his loving care and support as husband, father, and grandfather.

His son, Marlo Kenneth preceded him in death, as did also his father, Joseph Schrag; his father-in-law, John P. Kaufman; one sister-in-law and one brother-in-law.

He leaves to mourn his departure: his bereaved wife, Elsie; his daughter, Darleen and her husband Earl; his beloved grandchildren, Mark and Marsha; his mother, Mrs. Joe Schrag; six brothers, Dave, Joe, Ervin, Art, Paul, Pete; two sisters, Alvina Krehbiel and Mrs. Herman Krehbiel and all their families; also his mother-in-law, Mrs. John P. Kaufman and her children, Mrs. Japhet Stucky, Mrs. John E. Kaufman, Ed., Christ, Ray and Paul Kaufman and all their families; besides other relatives and friends.

The Departed truly rejoices —
The strife is over, the battle done;
The song of triumph has begun,
Al-le-lu-ia! Amen!
