Halstead Farmer dies of Injury

Halstead, Kan. — An unusual farm accident southwest of here on June 20 claimed the life of William F. Schowalter, 55, farmer and lifelong resident of this community.

Mr. Schowalter was driving a tractor pulling a combine on a county road when part of the combine's drive shaft or gear box shattered and one of the fragments struck him in the head. Two neighbors, "Bus" Westerman and Ralph Ward, were assisting Schowalter and reported the accident. He was taken to the Halstead Hospital and then to St. Francis Hospital in Wichita where he died about 4 p.m.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church here, of which he was a member. Rev. Roland Goering and Ref. Melvin Schmidt officiated.

Survivors include his widow and a son, William A. of Halstead, a daughter, Mrs. Darreld Easter of Wichita, and four grandchildren.
