Bernard Abraham, the son of Abraham and Anna Schowalter, Nee Kaufman, was born at Halstead, Kansas, on November 12, 1906. He grew to young manhood in the home community and graduated from the Halstead high school with the class of 1924.
On May 22, 1921, he was baptized by the Reverent [sic] J. E. Amstutz upon confession of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and became a member of the First Mennonite Church of Halstead.
Bernard was endowed with an unusual tenor voice and a great interest and love for music, and after his graduation from high school, he entered the State Teachers College at Emporia where he received his degree of Bachelor of Science in 1928, having majored in music. He continued his studies at Chicago Musical college and was awarded a Masters Degree in voice in 1932.
After teaching for some time in Stevens College at Columbia, Mo., and at the State Teachers College at Minot, North Dakota, Bernard returned to Chicago where he has lived for the past few years, striving toward higher attainments in is chosen work.
Early in November of 1940, he became seriously ill and ere long he decided to return to Halstead to consult with the physicians there. As soon as the diagnosis was made, it was evident that there was little hope for his recovery. A subacute bacterial endocarditis which was apparently a carry-over from a severe childhood illness developed with alarming rapidity. After a stay at the hospital of six months, he died on June 26 at 10 p.m., at the age of 34 years, 7 months, and 14 days.
He leaves to mourn his death, two sisters, Olga and Elizabeth Schowalter of Halstead, one brother Arthur Showalter of Route 1, Newton, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held in the First Mennonite church of Halstead, Kansas, on June 28, 1941 The Reverend A. E. Kreider of Bethel College officiated, assisted by Dr. C. E. Krehbiel of Newton.
