Young Men Injured, One Fatally, In Motorcycle Accident

DAVID SCHMUCKER OF HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA KILLED ALMOST INSTANTLY

Friends in Mennonite communities in Virginia were shocked to hear of the accident which happened recently near Greenwich, Va., in which David Schmucker, 19, was almost instantly killed and his companion, Herman H. Weaver, dangerously injured.

The following report of the tragedy, as published in the Sugar Creek (Ohio) Budget, was written by the Budget's correspondent at Lynnhaven, Va.:

A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday morning at about 3 a. m. when David Schmucker, 19, with Herman H. Weaver as passenger were on a motorcycle on their way to a dairy near Norfolk, where Herman is employed, crashed into a parked station wagon on Virginia Beach Boulevard. The latter had run out of gas and the vehicle was left on the main driving lane. The boys did not see it in time to avoid striking it, although attempting to, but swerved hitting the station wagon, also the driver of same who was apparently attempting to flag down traffic.

David and Herman were both knocked unconscious and David died without regaining consciousness. Herman soon revived and the three victims were taken to the hospital. David was found to be dead on arrival. Herman is suffering with a broken arm, compound fracture of the leg and one foot broken. He is the son of William and Maude Stutzman Weaver and is in the st. Vincents Hospital, Norfolk, Va.

His mother was in Ohio at the time and was called home by telegram. Both boys are members of the Mennonite church at Fentress. The station wagon driver is suffering with a punctured lung due to broken ribs and is said to be in a serious condition.

Funeral services for David were held Thursday at 2:30, Clayton Bergey, home minister, Truman Brunk, Denbiegh, Va., and Wm. Jennings of Knoxville, Tenn., having charge of the services. David was the son of Daniel and Verna Mast Schmucker, now residing at Harrisonburg, Va. His age was 19 years, 7 month and 19 days.
