Fall Down Basement Steps Fatal To Miss Schmitt of Halstead

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD LAST SUNDAY AT HALSTEAD MENNONITE CHURCH

Funeral services for Miss Katie Schmitt of Halstead, who was fatally injured in a fall at her home Thursday, Jan. 14, were held last Sunday afternoon at the Halstead Mennonite church. There was a large attendance at the services, which were conducted by the local pastor, Rev. D. C. Wedel.

The following report of the fatal accident was given in last week's issue by the Halstead Independent.

Head injuries received in a fall backwards down the basement steps of her home Thursday morning caused the death of Miss Katie Schmitt, aged 64. Miss Schmitt was found by Billy Nelligan, who had gone to her home on an errand from the hospital. When he knocked at the front door and received no answer, yet saw a light in the kitchen, Billy went to the back door, and also noticed the basement light burning. Looking in the basement window he saw Miss Schmitt lying a the bottom of the steps.

He summoned Horace Edmonds, school music instructor, and W. H. Hunt, living next door. They called a doctor and the McCarthy and Dreese ambulance, but Miss Schmitt had succumbed before reaching the hospital.

Miss Schmidt, who was born on the old home place west of town, is survived by a sister, Mrs. Selma Krehbiel of Maize, and one brother, Dan T. Schmitt of Halstead, as well as other relatives and friends.
