SARA ELIZABETH SCHMIDT

Mrs. Sara Elizabeth Frey Schmidt was born on April 22, 1898, in Marion County, Kansas, the third child of Cornelius and Helena Frey. She died on June 4, 1974 at Bethesda Hospital, Goessel, as a result of failing health since she suffered strokes in 1963 and 1968. She was 76.

She attended the Greenfield School and also the elementary schools at Coy, Okla. where the family lived from 1908 to 1916. She also attended the Goessel Preparatory School for one years.

On Aug. 2, 1914, she was baptized into the fellowship of the Bethanian Mennonite Church at Coy by Rev. H. R. Voth. Later she transferred her member ship to the Bethel College Mennonite Church, North Newton. After her marriage to Paul G. Schmidt on June 13, 1935, she transferred her membership to the Tabor Mennonite Church.

Mrs. Schmidt is fondly remembered by many as a faithful and dedicated Sunday school teacher of children. This was her main interest in church, beginning at age 14, and she served in this capacity for 51 years. Her other interest in church was the Women's Society.

She is also remembered for her love of flowers and her friendship to many. She took particular joy in following the lives of those children whom she had taught in Sunday school.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. Surviving are her husband of Goessel; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Unruh and husband LaVern; an only granddaughter, Lavonne; one brother, A. J. Frey and wife Mabel of Newton; and a sister Marie and husband, Mac Temple of Newton.
