Dalhart, Texas,

June 6, 1931.

. . .

Today a funeral will take place at our (Unity) Church. The deceased is Luanna Deloris (3 yrs., 4 mo.) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Schmidt. Her death came Thursday the 4th. When a shower approached at about 12:30 p. m. the little girl and her mother went out to look after the chickens (A little wind most always accompanies showers here on the plains) So going to the brooder house the mother asked the little girl to go behind the brooder house out of the wind. Just when enough behind the house the wind overturned it and striking down on little Deloris with the roof, Mrs. Schmidt quickly summoned to Norman Schmidt who are living with them at present, uplifted the house (the father at present was working in the field about five miles from home) Taking the dead body in the car Norman and the girl’s mother went to the father which was a terrible shock to him and also to the whole community. From there she was taken to the doctor at Texline, then to the undertaker where she was dressed and put in the coffin then brought to the parents home that evening, where she is a silent form sweetly resting, while before she was a very lovely flourishing flower. Bright, intelligent and handsome she was the joy of the home. Interment will be made in nearly cemetery for which a permit had been issued the week prior to her death. Mrs. Schmidt’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Esau and daughter Lena and Peter Penner, an uncle from Littlefield, Texas, are already here to attend the funeral, also Mr. and Mrs. Dan Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Schmidt and Marie Unruh from Montezuma, Kansas and Lydia Schmidt from Halstead, Kansas.
