JACOB D. SCHMIDT

Jacob D. Schmidt, son of David and Eva Voth Schmidt, was born June 12, 1883, in Hamilton county, Nebraska. Here he received his elementary training.

On July 14, 1901, he was baptized upon his confession of faith and received into the Mennonite Brethren church at Henderson, Neb.

He was united in marriage to Mary Buller March 4, 1909. One son was born to this union.

Mr. Schmidt was a farmer all his life, and lived at several places in York and Hamilton counties. He cherished very dearly his home life and his associations with friends and neighbors.

In March 1959 the Schmidts observed their 50th wedding anniversary. This event attended by a host of relatives and members of their congregations, was a joyous occasion for them as they reflected on the Lord's leading in their lives.

In recent years Mr. Schmidt's health began to fail. In August 1959 he suffered a stroke and was admitted to York General hospital. Here he remained a patient for about one month. After his discharge he was under the care of his family in his own home. Throughout his illness he was grateful for any kindness shown him. He responded cheerfully to the reading of the Scripture and repeatedly voiced his longing to enter his heavenly rest.

On May 4, 1960, when his condition had become much worse, he was admitted to Henderson Community hospital. After ten days of critical illness, he departed this life quietly and suddenly on Saturday morning, May 14, 1960, at the age of 76 years.

Left to mourn his departure are his sorrowing widow, Mrs. Mary Schmidt, and one son, Henry. Preceding him in death were his father and mother; two brothers, David and John; one sister, Eva; one half-brother, Henry Janzen; and one half-sister, Mrs. Mary Fast.
