RELATIVES AND FRIENDS FROM SEVERAL STATES ATTEND DOUBLE FUNERAL

The Halstead, Kansas, Independent gives the following report of the large funeral which was held there last week for Mr. and Mrs. Jac. J. R. Schmidt [sic Jac. A. R. Schmidt], who were killed in a automobile accident:

One of the largest funerals ever held in Halstead, attended by more than 1500 persons, was that of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob A. R. Schmidt, at the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, west of Halstead Wednesday afternoon. Prayer service was held at the home at 1 p.m. and church services at 2 p.m.

The church was filled to capacity, as was a tent with a seating capacity of 1000, erected in the church yard. Loud speakers were installed for those in the tent and outside. About 250 automobiles were parked in the vicinity of the church.

Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt were killed last Friday afternoon in a auto accident 3 miles east of Moran, Kans. Two children, Osie and Bernitta, who were being treated at the Halstead hospital for injuries received in the wreck, were assisted to the funeral. More than 200 relatives of the deceased attended, several from out of the state. The Schmidts are survived by 18 children.

Rev. F. W. Wenger of Hesston and Rev. Carl Dirks officiated at the funeral and Rev. Jacob Dirks gave the eulogy in German. Rev. Henry Wenger and Dave Unruh were in charge of the singing.
