HENRY SCHMIDT

It pleased the Lord to call to himself, Henry Schmidt of Edmonton, Alberta.

Henry Schmidt was born in Russia on February 28, 1899. On July 28, 1928, he married Elizabeth Martens and God blessed their union with a son and three daughters. The Schmidts emigrated to Canada in 1930 and resided in Coaldale, Alberta. Here, in 1935, he was baptized upon his confession of faith and accepted into the fellowship of the Mennonite Brethren Church.

On August 1, 1966 he was predeceased by his wife and after her passing he moved to Edmonton to reside with his children. Lonely days followed and the last eight months of his life were accompanied with much suffering. On April 12, 1969, God gently called him home.

Funeral services were held in the Mennonite Brethren Church in Coaldale on April 19. Rev. D. J. Pankratz comforted the bereaved with the words of Jesus from John 11:11, "Our friend ... sleepeth." He stressed how sleeping in Jesus implied rest from our labours, the consummation of all that faith implies and the prospect of a glorious awakening. Rev. Peter Rempel spoke on the Christian faith in eternal life, based on 1 Peter 1 :21-24. At the graveside Rev. H. H. Kornelsen read John 5::25 and 2 Timothy 4:7,8 and prayed.

He is survived by one son and three daughters; a daughter-in-law and three sons-in-law and eight grandchildren.
