Mrs. Eva Schmidt

Eva Schmidt (By birth Eva Jantz) was born March 5, 1950, in Russia. There she grew to womanhood. She united in marriage with Henry H. Schmidt in the year 1870. After several years they immigrated to America in 1874. Arriving here they went to Ohio, where they spent several years. Then later they moved to Kansas, settling in Lonetree township, in McPherson County. And then still later they moved to Durham, Marion County, Kansas. The brother having been called to the Ministry, spent much time in the service of the Lord; the sister stood by the brother in the service for the Lord, in caring for the family, and helping the brother in the work of the Ministry as best she knew how.

The Sister was struck with a stroke of paralysis on Nov. 1, 1912, this causing much sadness in the home, for the sister became helpless and had to be taken care of. The brother then found it necessary to retire from farming, and take care of his wife. But not many years later the brother was taken from her though death on Oct. 11, 1922.

The mother passed away from this earthly care and grief the night of Dec. 18, 1928, at the home of Brother Sam Dirks, west of Montezuma, Kan., the cause of her death seemingly becoming another stroke of Paralysis.

She had reached the age of 78 years, 9 months and 13 days. She became converted shortly after they came to Kansas. Father and mother had lived together in holy Matrimony for a little over 52 years. To this union 10 children were born, of which 8 are living. Mother has been grandmother of 55 grandchildren, of which number 46 are still living. Mother has been a widow for 6 years. She now leaves to mourn her, 8 children, 46 grandchildren, 3 brothers and two sisters. We shall long remember mother, for she has been the wife of a minister, and she has made many friends. Funeral services were held in the Montezuma Mennonite Church, Friday afternoon, Dec. 21, 1928. Services were conducted by brother Rev. John A. Koehn. The remains were laid to rest in the nearby cemetary [sic]. — Contributed.
