ELIZABETH WARKENTIN SCHMIDT

Elizabeth Warkentin Schmidt, daughter of P. P. and Justina (Wiens) Warkentin, was born March 3, 1877 at Hillsboro, Kan. and passed to her eternal home on Dec. 20, 1966 at the age of 89 years, eight months and 17 days.

At the age of 16 she was baptized upon confession of faith in Christ and united with the Hillsboro Mennonite Church. She was united in marriage on July 8, 1906 to Tobias D. Schmidt, a widower with eight children, who she accepted willingly. At this time she also transferred her membership to the Medford, Okla. Mennonite Church. They lived on a farm east of Medford. Later they purchased a farm north-east of Medford. They were blessed with six children, and shared joys and sorrows for 20 years when the Lord called her companion to his heavenly Home. One year later her son, Willie, was instantly killed by lightning.

In 1935 she moved to Newton, Kan. At this time she transferred her membership to the First Mennonite Church of Newton, of which she was a faithful member until her death. She had a heart condition and in 1958 she had a stroke, but she was always cheerful through all her suffering.

She leaves to mourn her passing five children, Freda and Herman Flaming of Medford, Juanita and Waldo Neufeld of Phoenix, Ariz., Lorena and Edward Friesen, and Albert and Erna Schmidt of Medford. David and Kathryn Schmidt of Newton, Kan.; stepchildren, Ben and Martha Schmidt of Medford, Marie and Neal Redger of Durham, Kan., Martha and John Neufeld of Medford, John and Opal Schmidt of Blackwell, Okla., Anna Schmidt of Goessel, Kan., and Katie Warkentin of Canton, Kan.; one sister, Helena Janzen, Goessel, Kan.; 36 grandchildren, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. Two stepdaughters, Eva Schmidt and Agnes Neufeld, and three sisters and four brothers preceded her in death.
