— A former resident of the Newton vicinity, Daniel P. Schmidt died at Wenatche [sic Wenatchee], Wash, on Aug 5 according to word received by relatives here. He leaves his wife and a sister, Mrs. J. M. Harms of Whitewater. A memorial service for Mr. Schmidt was held Wednesday morning at the Alexanderwohl church in connection with the Peter Warkentin funeral service.

DANIEL P. SCHMIDT

Daniel P. Schmidt was born in Heinrich's Dorf [sic Heinrichsdorf], Russia April 21, 1879, son of Peter and Susanna (Unruh) Schmidt. He was the second youngest of twelve children. His father died on Aug. 4, 1891, in Russia and he migrated to the U. S. from Russia with his mother, one brother, and two sisters on January 6, 1894, and settled in the Alexanderwohl church community, making his home here for the first 10 years.

He obtained his elementary education in the Gordon school near Goessel, Kansas. Later he attended the business college at Newton for some time.

He was a contractor for many years. He made his home with his sister, Mrs. Caroline Harms, for 12 years, after which he left for Montana and took up a homestead where he lived a number of years. Later he moved to Wenatchee, Washington, where he lived until his death.

He was baptized upon confession of faith in his Redeemer Jesus Christ by Rev. Peter Balzer and joined the Alexanderwohl church. The departed attended church services in the different localities where he lived, but retained his membership in the Alexanderwohl church until his death.

Through an accident in his early youth his hip was injured, which left him a cripple the remaining days of his life. Also in his life many days of sorrow, trials and suffering were common. He passed away Aug. 12, 1950, at 11 p. m. at Wanatchee [sic Wenatchee], Washington, reaching the age of 71 years, three months, and 21 days.

Those who survive him are his wife. Mrs. Nettie Kennedy Schmidt; one sister. Mrs. Caroline Harms; five nieces and three nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services for the departed were held at Wanatchee [sic Wenatchee] on Wendnesday [sic] at 10:30 a. m. Memorial services were held at the same time in the Alexanderwohl church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Phil. A. Wedel.
