— Funeral services were held at Ulysses on April 13 for Bernhard Schmidt, 69, well-known retired farmer there and a native of Harvey County. He was born near Newton Feb. 27, 1888, and farmed here before moving to the Ulysses area in 1933. He died April 9 after being ill since 1951. A brother, Isaac Schmidt, resides here.

BERNHARD SCHMIDT

Bernhard Schmidt, son of Jacob and Elizabeth Schmidt, was born Feb. 27, 1888, in Harvey County near Newton, Kanas. At 8:30 p.m. on April 9, 1957, at his home, he quietly passed from this earthly life to be with the Lord. He reached the age of 69 years, one month and 12 days.

He was baptized on June 4, 1906, and accepted into the Grace Hill Mennonite church near Newton. He was united in holy matrimony to Lena Wedel of Lehigh, Kansas on March 25, 1917, and to this union nine children were born, of whom two sons, Ervin and Harvey, preceded him in death.

His early life was spent in Harvey County where he engaged in farming. In April 1933 he with his family moved to Grant County, southwest of Ulysses, Kansas. Trying times were experienced at first, but the Lord blessed and prospered when the better years returned after the great drouth in the 1930's. He was actively engaged in farming until the fall of 1951 when he suffered a stroke which left him partly paralkzed [sic]. Due to this illness he lost his speech, from which he never recovered.

He leaves to mourn his passing, not without hope but with the hope of meeting again in the Beyond, his wife Lena; six sons, one daughter and nine grandchildren, Albert and Edna Schmidt of Cassoday, Kansas, Isaac and Verna Harms of Aberdeen, Idaho, Daniel and Ruby Schmidt, Harry and Phyllis Schmidt, Carl Schmidt, Elmer and Shirley Schmidt, and Wilbert Schmidt, all of Uuysses [sic Ulysses], Kan.; two brothers, Isaac Schmidt of Newton, and Abe Schmidt of Llaves, New Mexico. — The Bereaved Family.
