Brothers Attacked One Fatally Hurt

Henderson, Neb. — Word was received here of a tragedy which befell the Loyal Schmidt family of Omaha when their two sons were attacked, resulting in the death of Allen, age 12, and serious injuries to his brother Leslie, 10.

The brothers left home early Saturday afternoon, Oct. 16, to sell candy door to door, telling their father they would be home in time for supper. On Sunday afternoon the body of Allen was found on the bank of the Missouri River near the South Omaha Bridge. Police said his throat had been slashed.

While search parties were still out looking for the boys, 10-year-old Leslie was seen to crawl out of weeds near the river, stand up, and then fall to the ground. He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital with stab wounds about the head.

The alleged attacker of the boys is a 30-year-old laborer who was apprehended Oct. 18 in Rock Island, Ill.

The Schmidt family lived here in 1960-61 when the parents were employed at Grace Children's Home as house parents. They have also served on the Congo mission field, and since 1966 Mr. Schmidt has been in charge of maintenance and construction at Grace Bible Institute.
