HARVEY SHELLY SCHMELL

Harvey Shelly Schmell, son of Edward and Mary Shelly Schmell, was born January 23, 1884, in Plumstead township, Bucks county, Pennsylvania. He was baptized on confession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age in the Deep Run Mennonite congregation of the Franconia Conference.

He married Kate Wismer, who died in 1918. They had one son, Walter. He then married Annie Yerkes, who died in 1931. Following this he married Elizabeth Loux, who preceded him in death in February 24, 1949.

Since August 1918 he had been a member of the Deep Run Mennonite congregation of the Eastern Conference. During these years he lived in Hatboro, Pennsylvania, where he was employed as a foundry worker.

On Friday, May 25, 1951, he underwent an operation and was recovering when he unexpectedly took sick. He fell asleep early Monday morning, May 28, 1951, at the age 67 years. Precious to his operation he had quietly expressed his trust in Jesus Christ. He was a man of few words who had learned, through the loss of his life mates, to calmly face death. During these last years he attended meeting with his housekeeper quite regularly in spite of the distance.

Those who remain are his son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Martha Schmell; his grandchildren, Arthur and Marion; his two brothers and two sisters, and his housekeeper, Mrs. Emma Price.

The funeral and interment was at the Deep Run meetinghouse on May 30, 1951. The pastor, J. Herbert Fretz, preached on I Thessalonians 4:13-18.
