John Saner

John Saner, pioneer resident of Kingman county, Kansas died at the home of his son John in Kingman, Saturday, June 22, after a prolonged illness.

He was born April 15, 1863, at Horodisht, South Russia. His mother died when he was five years old and mr. saner came to America with his father and other members of the family in 1874, settling in Logan county, Ohio. In 1879 the family joined a party of immigrants, moving to Marion, S. D. In 1882 he came to Reno county, Kansas, taking a farm near Pretty prairie.

He was one of the charter group who organized the Pretty Prairie Mennonite church and his father, who died the following year, was the first to be buried in the cemetery there. In 1884 Mr. Saner was married to Lizzie Graber. One son was born to this union. Mrs. Saner died in 1888. On Dec. 5, 1889, he was again married to Lena Flickinger. Ten years later the family moved to Kingman county, settling on a farm near Murdock, where Mr. Saner lived until the fall of 1939.

Mrs. Saner died in 1929, leaving her husband and ten children.

After his retirement from the farm last year, Mr. Saner made his home with his children. He spent last winter in South Dakota and since April had been living with his son in Kingman.

Surviving him are three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Base of Cleveland; Mrs. Katie Stucky of Kingman; and Ella, at present a student of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago; seven sons, Jake, Jonas and John, all of Kingman; Ben of Monroe, Washington; Julius and Chris of Marion, S. D., and Ernest of Cassody {sic Cassoday], Kansas. He also leaves twenty-seven grandchildren and thirteen great=-grandchildren and a great many other relatives. All of the children were present at the funeral.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon, June 24, at the Bethany Mennonite church southeast of Kingman, of which Mr. Saner was a member. Rev. John R. Duerksen, Rev. P. P. Tschetter and rev. E. J. Neuenschwander officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.
