HENRY J. ROSE

Henry J. Rose, son of Johann and Helena (Peters) Rose, was born Aug. 12, 1868, in South Russia. He came to the U.S. with his parents at the age of eight years in 1876 and the family settled in the Springfield community near Lehigh, Kansas. He received his public school training in the Springfield district school.

He was baptized upon confession of faith in his Redeemer in his early youth and was accepted as a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church.

On Oct. 30, 1889, he was united in marriage with Katherina Duerksen. They made their home one half mile east of the Springfield K.M.B. church, and operated a country store. To this union were born three children, Henry, Kathrine and Helen.

From here the family moved to Dallas, Oregon where he, being especially talented in music, served the church as music minister. Later they moved to Shafter, California. Here on May 2, 1924, his wife passed away.

After living as a widower for about a year and a half he found another life companion in Mary B. Schmidt of Goessel, Kansas. He joined her in marriage on Sept 1, 1925. Then he moved to Reedley, Calif., from where he came to Goessel, Ks. and transferred his membership back to the Alexanderwohl church whose faithful member he remained until the end. He lived in Goessel only a short time, then moved to Hillsboro, Ks. where he lived at the time of his departure.

Along with all afflictions and trials that came in life, while in good health he enjoyed shopwork as his vocation wherewith he earned his daily bread, and in leisure time he wrote poems and songs, played his violin and harmonica to entertain friends that came to see him, until the last years when the afflictions of old age made their impressions very forcibly. In his failing years he was carefully ministered to by his wife, Rev. P. R. Jost (a neighbor), and others who did all they could to help him in his feeble condition. He also spent a number of weeks in the Salem hospital of Hillsboro. He passed away Oct. 27, 1952, reaching the age of 84 years, two months and 15 days.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife Mary of the home, two children, Henry and wife Laura, Kathrine and her husband, Jesse M. Scott, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild, one brother John Rose and one sister Helena (Mrs. C. K. Eidsen), and many other relatives and friends. One daughter Helen preceded him in death Mar. 17, 1939.

Job 5:26, ‘Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, as a shock of corn cometh in his season."
