Fatal Highway Accident Near Burns

MOTHER OF 3 KILLED IN COLLISION ON WAY TO CHURCH PICNIC

Bums, Kans. — Plans for the annual Sunday school picnic and children’s day program of the First Mennonite church here were suddenly cancelled on Sunday, June 8, when Mrs. Ray Roberts, 29, was fatally injured in an auto accident en route to the program. Her daughter Marcia Maria, 5, is in the El Dorado hospital with critical injuries.

The Roberts family, en route to the Peabody Park where the church program was to be held, was traveling west on a country road when their car collided with a Wichita car coming from the south. Mr. Roberts, a daughter Margaret, 7, and son Chester, 3, had only minor injuries. A woman in the other car suffered a fractured pelvis, cuts and bruises.

Funeral services for Mrs. Roberts were held at the First Mennonite church here Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Martin Classen officiating.

Besides her husband and three children, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Mary Stucky, two sisters and three brothers.

MRS. ETHEL JUNE ROBERTS

Mrs. Ethel June (Stucky) Roberts, wife of Ray Roberts, Jr., was born May 28, 1923, at Horton, Kansas. It pleased the Lord to call her Home June 8, 1952, at about 10:15 a.m. of a fatal injury caused in an automobile accident, which occured [sic] six and one half miles west of Bums, Kansas, while en route to a Children’s Day picnic at Peabody, Kansas. Ethel reached the age of 29 years and 10 days.

Most of her early life was spent at Burrton, Kansas, where she received her elementary and high school education, except for the months of her high school, which last two months of high school, which she finished at Cassoday, Kansas upon moving to that community. Ethel enjoyed music very much. Some of her favorite songs were “Safe in the Arms of Jesus" and “No Night There." She loved to read, which caused her to be quite scholarly in her school work.

The Lord gifted her with a very cheerful disposition, which has helped much in the many trials that have come in her life. Her friendly smile gave her many friends. Just three years ago she was involved in an auto accident which hospitalized her for a long period of time.

She received Christ as her personal Saviour at the age of 15 and was baptized upon her confession of faith by Rev. Walter H. Dyck on June 5, 1938, and received as member of the Burrton Mennonite church at Burrton, Kansas.

She was united in marriage to Ray Roberts, Jr. on June 14, 1942, at Burrton, Kansas by Rev. J. J. Regier. In this union they shared joys and sorrows 10 years less six days. This seems be an all too early departure, but God in His wisdom saw fit to call her to Himself so early in life, and we are confident that He makes no mistakes. This union was blessed with four children. One son Michael Kent preceded his mother in death at infancy, almost two years ago. The greater part of her married life was spent at Burns, Kansas, where she joined the First Mennonite church of Burns on June 9, 1946, of which she remained a faithful member until her death.

She has been a great comfort to her husband, and her presence and companionship will be missed very much. She was closely attached to her children, and her going seems to be too soon, and too sudden, yet we rejoice in her redemption, and are looking to a glorious reunion in Heaven where there shall be no parting, no pain, no heart ache, no sorrow, and no tears.

She is survived by her husband, Ray Roberts, Jr.; three children, Mary Margaret 7, Marsha Marie 5, (who is hospitalized at this time of injuries received in the same accident), Chester Ray 4; her mother, Mrs. Mary Stucky; two sisters and three brothers, Edith (Mrs. Marvin B. Kaufman) of McPherson, Kansas, Viola (Mrs. Ted Pankratz) of Burns, Roy Stucky of Burns, Harry and Clyde, who are at home with their mother; her mother-in-law, father-in-law, six brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law, and a host of relatives and friends.

We sorrow not as those who have no hope, but are looking to that glorious day of resurrection where there shall be no separation. — The bereaved husband and family.
