JOHNSTOWN, Colo. — Seven Mennonites from Alberta died Nov. 20 in a crash on an Interstate highway north of Denver, Canwest News Service reported.
Jacob Rempel Sr., 42, of Vauxhall; his wife, Susana, 40; and their son, Jacob, 16; were driving with their sister-in-law Susana Rempel, 30 of Willingdon; and her sons, Johan, 3, and Heinrich, 21 months.
A 33-year-old man from Taber, a family friend, was also killed in the accident. He was identified as Juan Dyck by Canwest and Joseph Dick by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation News.
Jacob and Susana Rempel leave several children orphaned, including Peter, 18, Tina, 15, and Eva, 8, according to Canwest.
Peter Rempel, recently married, told Canwest he and his wife, Agatha, plan to care for his sisters, though final arrangements had not yet been made.
John Hiebert, the family's pastor, who recently conducted Peter Rempel's wedding, oversaw the Nov. 30 funerals of Jacob Sr., Susana and Jacob Rempel Jr.
"I don't have the strength my self, but the Lord does," Hiebert told Canwest.
Susana and Jacob Rempel Sr. moved to Alberta from a colony in Mexico in 1995. They returned to Mexico to sell some vehicles.
The five adults were taking turns driving around-the-clock to return to Alberta, Canwest reported. Early Nov. 20 they were north of Denver when their 1992 Chevrolet Suburban fell from an Interstate 25 overpass onto an embankment and caught fire, Colorado state troopers told CBC News. The cause of the accident was unknown.
