Associate Member of MCC Dies at Meade

Meade, Kan. — George J. Rempel, 65, prominent Meade area farmer, died at Meade District hospital on March 3 after a long illness.

Mr. Rempel served for many years as an associate member of the Mennonite Central Committee representing the Emmanuel Mennonite Church here. He had been a resident of this community since 1906.

Survivors include his widow, the former Marie Friesen, six sons, five daughters, and 21 grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Thursday forenoon, March 6, at the Emmanuel Church with Rev. John K. Reimer officiating.

GEORGE J. REMPEL

George J. Rempel was born at Fairbury, Neb. on Jan. 20, 1904. He went to be with the Lord on March 3, 1969, reaching the age of 65 years, one month, and 11 days. He had been ill for several months with cancer.

In 1906 he moved with his parents to Meade, Kan., where he worked as a mechanic and farmer until his death.

At the age of 19 he was baptized upon confession of faith and accepted into the fellowship of the Mennonite Church. In 1944 he joined the newly organized Emmanuel Mennonite Church, in which he was ordained as a deacon in 1948.

He was married to Marie Friesen on Sept. 11, 1924. Together they had the joy and responsibility of raising eight sons and five daughters.

He lived a life of unselfish service in his church and community. He was active in the Mennonite Central Committee and other avenues of service. During the last few days he expressed the conviction that he was ready to meet his Lord.

Preceding him in death were two sons, Pete and Donald.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; six sons and daughters-in-law, Herman and Eva, John and Phyllis, and Walter and Kathy of Meade, Will and Alta of Protection, Edwin and Kathrine of Joes, Colo., and Eldon and Alvera of Adams, Okla.; five daughters and two sons-in-law, Margaret (Mrs. Dave C. Reimer) of Meade, Erma (Mrs. Ken Kauffman) of West Liberty, Ohio, Marilyn of Tangier, Morocco, Eileen of Akron, Pa., and Helen of Wichita, Kan.; his stepmother, Mrs. Peter F. Rempel, three brothers, Peter J. of Meade, Jake of Salem, Oregon, and Ben of Dallas, Oregon; seven sisters, Agnes (Mrs. George T. Classen), Helen (Mrs. John A. Isaac), Ann (Mrs. Ben Classen), Kathrine (Mrs. Martin Classen) all of Dallas, Oregon, Lizzie (Mrs. Jacob Bartel) of Meade, Margaret (Mrs. Peter d. Friesen) and Marie (Mrs. Jake Thiessen of Steinbach, Manitoba; 21 grandchildren and many friends.

We feel deeply the loss of our loved one but we rejoice that the Lord has taken him to his eternal Home.
