Mother Killed in Collision
LOMA PLATA, Paraguay. — We were having a week of prayer meetings at the beginning of the New Year at Menno. On Jan. 6 (a holiday here commemorating the coming of the Wise Men to the Christ Child), the Dave Reimer family had been visiting at their brother's place in another village.
Recently quite a few Mennonites in Menno have acquired used cars and can travel with much more facility. Reimers belonged to those fortunate ones. At 5:30 p.m. they left to do chores at home so that they could attend prayer meeting that evening.
AT A ROAD intersection (with visibility reduced due to much dust) the Relier car collided with a big truck driven by Paraguayans. The small vehicle overturned, throwing the passengers out. Father, mother and a 10-year-old daughter were seriously injured. The Paraguayans — none oft hem hurt seriously — dealt out some pain relievers they happened to have along and ran to the next village to call for help.
It so happened that they came to Rev. A. Reimer, brother of Dave. Rev. Reimer rushed to the scene with his motorcycle, taking along some first aid articles, but not knowing he was to aid his relatives.
All three, especially the mother, whose chest was crushed, suffered intensely. She was rushed to the hospital as soon as possible with another delivery van belonging to a Mennonite in another village.
BUT ALL EFFORTS to save her life were in vain, she died on the emergency table. The daughter suffered deep cuts and leg and arm fractures. The father sustained some cuts, bruises and a brain concussion.
On Jan. 7 the sad funeral of Mrs. Reimer took place in the church. Father and daughter are patients in the hospital, but eight children, ranging in age from 2 - 18, followed the casket. Many people came from far and near, in spite of heavy rain just before and during the services. Elder Friesen in his fatherly way admonished us to remember how fleeting this life is and to be ready to meet our God.
