. . .

— The worst automobile accident of the year took the lives of three people on highway 50S about eight miles west of Newton last Wednesday night. As they were approaching the Emma creek bridge, Dr. W. J. Reidy, dentist of Hutchinson, and wife and daughter, Mrs. Wm. Boyd, were blinded in their view of the road by mist and rain. Mr. Reidy applied the brakes to cut down his speed, with the result that his car skidded sideways into the path of an approaching truck. According to the first witnesses, Dr. Reidy suffered a broken back and his wife and daughter broken necks. Their car was badly smashed, while damages on a truck were only of a minor nature. According to a pamphlet which came to the editor's desk lately, "death begins at 40 . . . . you change drivers at 40; it is death that takes the wheel." After 40 miles per hour the danger of a fatal accident is very much increased.
