BLUFFTON, Ohio — Howard D. Raid, an emeritus professor of economics and business at Bluffton College, died Jan. 15 at Mennonite Memorial Home. He was 91.

He joined the Bluffton faculty in 1947 and taught economics and business for 32 years.

He also served in a variety of administrative assignments, including dean of men, acting academic dean, acting librarian and registrar. He was instrumental in creating a hands-on business management lab course — at the time, the only one of its kind in the United States.

Before teaching at Bluffton, Raid was a high school teacher, coach and superintendent in Sharon Center and Argyle, Iowa. He was pastor of Bethel Mennonite Church in Fortuna, Mo., from 1943 to 1945.

After retirement, Raid served from 1983 to 1997 as volunteer archivist for the acquisitions of Bluffton College, the Central District Conference of the General Conference Mennonite Church, Mennonite Mutual Aid and Africa Inter-Mennonite Mission.

He was a board member for Mennonite Mutual Aid Society, Mennonite Indemnity Inc., Menno Travel Service, Goodville Mutual Casualty co., the Mennonite Weekly Review advisory board and the Board of Business Administration of the General Conference Mennonite Church. He helped develop the Association of Mennonite Aid Societies.

During a two-year leave of absence from Bluffton, he was president of Freeman (S.D.) Junior College. He served with Mennonite Central Committee in 1968 as travel coordinator for the Mennonite World Conference assembly in Amsterdam.

He was a member of First Mennonite Church in Bluffton and had served as president of Central District Conference. He also had been secretary/treasurer of Mennonite Brotherhood Aid Association. He helped organize the Swiss Community Historical Society, the Et Cetera Shop, Bluffton Housing Inc. and Community Progress Corp.

Born Oct. 22, 1912, at West Point, Iowa, the son of Harvey J. Raid and Clara C. (Koller) Raid, he was a great-great-grandson of Henry Ellenberger, the first Mennonite pastor to serve west of the Mississippi River. He was ordained in 1943 at Zion Mennonite Church in Donnellson, Iowa.

He received a master's degree from Iowa State University in 1947 and a doctorate from Ohio State University in 1953.

On Aug. 11, 1940, he married Pauline Krehbiel, who died Feb. 12, 1984. On Nov. 29, 1991, he married Della I. Krebill Clark, who survives at Woodville, Ohio.

Also surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Raid and her husband, Lou Gomez, Jr., of Newton, Kan.; a brother, Melvin of Burlington, Iowa; a sister, Edith Boughton of West Burlington, Iowa; two step-children, Mary Reardon and Maurice Clark of Woodville, Ohio; three grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arlo and Wilton.

Burial and funeral services were held Jan. 24 at Zion Mennonite Church in Donnellson. A memorial service will be held April 10 at First Mennonite Church in Bluffton.
