JOHN D. PETERS

John D. Peters was born October 15, 1871, in the village Fuerstenwerder, /South Russia. He came to the United States with his parents, Dietrich and Helena (Fast) Peters, on July 4, 1878, and on July 6 came to Sutton, Nebr. They made their home 4½ miles south of Henderson, Nebr., in York county. He has lived in the vicinity of Henderson all his life.

On May 22, 1893, he was baptized upon the confession of his faith by Elder Peter J. Friesen and accepted as member into the Bethesda Mennonite church.

On Jan 19, 1890, he was married to Katharina Wieler. Their union lasted 44 years and was blessed with 6 sons and 3 daughters. All, together with their mother, survive him.

The children are as follows: Mrs. Helen Beishline, Grand Island, Nebr.; William, Henderson; Dietrich, Stockham; Gerhard, Wichita, Kans.; Mrs. Anna Siebert, Lushton, Nebr.; Kathryn, at home; Jacob, Wichita, Kans.; Henry, Henderson, Nebr., and John, York, Nebr., two sons-in-law, five daughters-in-law, 23 grandchildren, 2 of which preceded him in death; one brother, Isaac D. Peters of Henderson.

Father and mother retired from the farm in 1930 and moved to Henderson. Father's health began to fail rapidly in December and a week before his departure he suffered severe pains. The last few days he seemed to be without pains and did not complain at all. His prayer was that the Lord would take him to his heavenly home. He had the assurance of his forgiveness of his sins. The Lord called him to his heavenly home April 15, 1943. He died peacefully in his sleep around midnight.

He attained the age of 71 years and 6 months.

At the home Rev. H. D. Epp spoke on I Chronicles 29:15. Then two numbers were rendered by a male quartet "Keiner wird zu Schanden" and "Shall we Gather at the River". In the church a number was sung by the male quartet and Rev. John F. Epp read and spoke on I Corinthians 15:10. Elder A. W. Friesen followed with a message on I Cor. 15:10 and Rom. 15:13.

Interment was in the church cemetery.
