ONE OF EARLY SETTLERS IN SOUTHERN MANITOBA CALLED BY DEATH

Winkler, Man. — Franz P. Peters, one of the early settlers to arrive in southern Manitoba from Russia in 1877, died at his home here Oct. 20 at the age of 81. Funeral services were held at the Bergthaler church, where he had been an active member.

Mr. Peters was only five years old when the family arrived here, coming by river steamer on the Red River to Emerson, Man. They traveled across the grassy marshes to settle at the tiny village of Blumenort. Mr. Peters engaged in the milling business here and in Saskatchewan, and later returned here to farm.
