text of obituary:

MRS. ADOLF E. PENNER

Mary Funk Penner, daughter of Peter W. and Maria Funk, was born on Nov. 28, 1889, at Silberfeld, Kansas, and departed from this life on Feb. 28, 1960, reaching the age of 70 years, three months, and one day.

When she was five years of age, her parents moved to the Brudertal community. She received her education in School District 70. On June 6, 1906, she was baptized upon her confession of faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior, and received into the Brudertal Mennonite church by Elder Wilhelm J. Ewert. In this congregation she remained an active member until her death.

On Nov. 9, 1911, she was united in marriage to Adolf E. Penner, and together they made their home on a farm northwest of Hillsboro. This union was blessed with two children, a daughter and a son. This marriage was further blessed by the privilege of celebrating the 25th wedding anniversary on Nov. 9, 1939, and the 45th wedding anniversary, which was celebrated in the home in 1956. The Lord permitted them to live happily together for a priod [sic] of 48 years, three months, and 19 days.

Mother was very much interested in the work of the church, and remained active in this work throughout her life. She regularly attended services of the church. She served as teacher of her Sunday school class and as chairman of the Naehverein for many years. She enjoyed these fields of service, even though many times it involved hard work. She spent many hours preparing the Sunday school lesson and sewing quilt blocks, children's clothing and the like for missions. Although she spent much time in such service she always had time to do her work in the home. At the end of a hard days' work, she would sit down to read the Bible, or she would sit and care for and visit with her grandchildren whom she loved so much.

Mother's health began to fail about a year ago, but after a short stay in the hospital, the Lord permitted her another year of health and activity. She entered the Salem Home four weks [sic] ago, weak and tired, with what appeared to be a case of pneumonia. She rallied briefly, but could not regain her strength and passed quietly into eternity Sunday, Feb. 28.

She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, Adolf E. Penner; a daughter Helen and husband J. J. Pankratz of Hydro, Okla.; a son Orlando and wife Ruth Penner of Hillsboro; her aged mother, Mrs. P. W. Funk, Hillsboro; two brothers, Jacob and Adolf Funk, both of Hillsboro; an aunt, Mrs. Ezra Funk of Drake, Sask.; and eight grandchildren.

We mourn her passing, but hope for an eternal reunion.

— The Family.
