— Word was received here that D. D. Penner, 73, of Trenton, Neb. died Sunday in an Omaha hospital where he had undergone surgery. He was a former resident of Hillsboro, being a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. H. D. Penner, and was a brother of Sister Gertrude Penner of the Bethel-Deaconess Hospital. His wife, five sons, two daughters, 14 grandchildren and a number of other brothers and sisters survive.

DANIEL DAVID PENNER

Daniel David Penner, the eldest son of Rev. and Mrs. H. D. Penner, was born near Hillsboro, Kan., Dec. 18, 1887. His boyhood was spent in Harvey and Marion Counties, Kan., where he received his elementary education. He later attended the Hillsboro Preparatory School established by his father, and in 1911 graduated from Bethel College Academy in Newton. He was united in marriage to Sara Wiebe on Aug. 11, 1912.

Mr. Penner taught in rural schools for 11 years, first near Hillsboro, Kan., then near Jansen, Neb. He was associated with Farmers' cooperatives for 30 years. During this time he held managerial positions in Hillsboro and Ludell, Kan., and in Trenton and Benkelman, Neb. At the time of his retirement from this work in 1950, he had one of the longest tenures of service of all managers in this system. During the past several years Mr. Penner had been secretary of the Trenton Public Schools.

Throughout his life, he was very active in community religious and educational programs. He was one of the lay leaders of the churches in the communities of his residence, serving on many boards and committees.

Mr. Penner's life on earth ended Dec. 16, 1960, two days prior to his seventy-third birthday, in an Omaha hospital.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Sara, seven children, Erna of Kansas City, Kan., Orville of Ellinwood, Kan., Donald of Neosho, Mo., Paul of Wichita, Kan., Clyde of Columbus, Ohio, Geraldine and Herbert, both of Omaha, Neb., and 15 grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, Waldo of Arkansas City, Kan., and Albert of Hillsboro; five sisters, Anna Gertrude of Newton, Linda Niles of Sedgwick, Kan., Ruth Dirks of Wichita, Hulda Haury of Tucson, Ariz., and Verna Miller of Partridge, Kan. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral and burial were in Trenton, Neb.
