First Canadian GC Missionary Dies

WINNIPEG — Anne Penner, the first Canadian to serve overseas with the General Conference Mennonite Church died Dec. 26 at the age of 80.

Penner, a native of Rosenfeld, Man., went to India in 1946 and served there as a nurse and hospital administrator until 1979.

Peter Kehler, former Asia secretary for the Commission on Overseas Mission, recalled visiting Penner in 1978. "What grace and kindness she showed to everyone," he said. "She spoke with a gentle voice as she gave instructions to the nurses and as she tried to console the sick."

Penner's memorial service was held Dec. 30 at Bethel Mennonite Church in Winnipeg. An Anne Penner Memorial Fund has been created to benefit Sewa Bhawan Hospital in Jagdeeshpur, India.
